Bart was closing in on her, but just then she heard the click of the door closing at the far end of the room. It was Magda the witch. Bis could feel her presence, smell her scent, sense her darkness even before she saw the woman. The witch was alone, and she’d come in quietly and was just standing there, her black eyes shining with dark light, the kind of light that sucks energy out of the world.

“Look inside yourself, Bart,” Bis whispered as she felt a chill rise up along her back as her mate came close. He was so focused on her that he hadn’t heard Magda come in, and Bis blinked as she realized that this was the moment, this was when it needed to happen, this was her chance to pull herself and her mate deeper into this—pull them deeper because it was their best chance of making it out at the end of it.

“I’m looking, but all I can see is you,” Bart growled, brushing a strand of hair from her face and then reaching around to the back of her neck and clamping down hard with his fingers. “All I can smell is your scent. All I can hear is your heart pounding in rhythm with mine.”

Bis blinked as she suddenly became conscious of her heart. She took a slow breath, frowning as she put her soft hand against her mate’s broad chest. The sound of his mighty heart almost deafened her as she felt it rock her body just from the contact.

“Oh, God,” she muttered, blinking again and then looking up into his eyes. “Our hearts are beating in time, Bart. In perfect sync. Like it’s one heart. Like we share a heart.”

She almost lost her train of thought as Bart grunted and lowered his face to her hair, breathing deep as he inhaled her scent. He held her neck tight with one hand, the other reaching behind her as he let his thick fingers trace their way down the middle of her back, all the way down over the curve of her bottom, teasing her by drawing little circles on her sturdy buttcheeks with his fingertips as her wetness oozed down the inside of her thighs.

“What would you do for me?” she whispered as the arousal snaked its way through her body. “To protect me, to protect the children we’re going to have, to raise them together, to be a family, a family forever.
